15 PROJECTS FROM THE HOUSING ELEMENT UPDATE (2021)
All properties listed on this page were upzoned by a majority vote of City Council in 2021, which was led by Mayor Catherine Blakespear and councilmembers Tony, Kranz, Joy Lyndes, Kellie Hinze, and Joe Mosca.
Affordable units: projects offer affordable units for varying income levels: extremely low-income, very low-income, and low-income. Renters must qualify each year. There is typically a waiting list for these, which is maintained by the site management.
Tenant parking: Per new California state law, large apartment complexes may separate parking fees from monthly rent fees., charging as much as $100/month for a parking space.
- Effective January 1, 2025, California law (AB 1317) requires landlords of new, large apartment buildings (16+ units) in specific counties to “unbundle” parking, meaning parking fees must be separated from rent. This law is intended to reduce housing costs and traffic, and applies only to new developments with certificates of occupancy issued on or after that date.
